Abstract: Hero Stones, known as Viragals in Telugu and Kannada and Virakkals in Tamil, are memorials erected to commemorate individuals who exhibited exceptional valour, often sacrificing their lives in battle. These stones, widespread over South India, serve as important historical and archaeological objects, offering deep insights into the martial traditions, socio-political structures, and religious beliefs of their respective periods. Hero Stones hold a prominent spatial and ritualistic significance inside temple complexes, underscoring their dual function as memorials and sacred artefacts. Their location within or adjacent to temple precincts highlights the convergence of memorial and religious activity, where the deification of slain soldiers corresponds with the wider Hindu customs of hero worship (vira bhakti). The inscriptions and iconographic representations on these stones often show themes of divine intervention, celestial rewards, and heroic martyrdom, so reinforcing their significance in moulding the communal memory of communities. The incorporation of Hero Stones into religious environments signifies their socio-political importance. Under the reign of dynasties like the Chalukyas, Kakatiyas, and Vijayanagara kings, these memorials served as tools of political legitimacy, glorifying martial sacrifice while promoting caste and kinship-based warrior identities. The endorsement of Hero Stones by ruling elites and local chieftains indicates their involvement in shaping historical myths that exalt militarised devotion and regional power conflicts. This study aims to contextualise the lasting cultural significance of Hero Stones by analysing their physical arrangement, religious meanings, and socio-political consequences inside South Indian temple complexes. This research elucidates the significant relationship between hero memory, temple ritualism, and power dynamics in historical South Indian civilisations through epigraphic analysis, iconographic interpretation, and comparative examination of regional differences.
